2018
SYNOPSIS
Book design for the publication What is going to happen is not the future, but what we are going to do, after the eponymous exhibition and public programme for ARCOmadrid 2018. The title is based on a quote by Jorge Luis Borges, which invites us to be alert and adopt a hands-on approach with the present, suggesting the future is a concept that does not exist any longer, having arguably finished with Modernity in the 1950s. Presenting three essays by the curatorial team – Chus Martínez, Rosa Lleó and Elise Lammer – alongside an interview with philosopher Santiago Alba Rico, images of works by artists included in the show are shown interspersed with the texts.
Book block printed in monochrome offset on uncoated paper (Munken Print White), with each signature including a 4-page spread in four-colour offset on coated paper (Arctic Volume White). Bound with cold glue on embossed paper (Rives Design) with flaps, printed in two-colour offset.
Set in GZA by Philipp Herrmann (2017) and Univers by Adrian Frutiger (1957). Cover image inspired by Peter Goodfellow’s illustration for Jorge Luis Borges’ The Book of Sand (1979) on Penguin Books.
