SYNOPSIS
Book design for Ana Manso's Agar, a publication surveying her recent works. Firmly rooted in a regular practice of painting and drawing, Manso’s visual imagination as language is mirrored in the accompanying essays, each one presented in its original language: curator Suzanne Cotter's in English, philosopher Federico Nicolao's in Italian, and artist André Romão's in Portuguese – each drawing on their distinct cultural perspectives and their relationship with the artist's oeuvre. Published by Cura.Books.
Book block printed in alternating sections of monochrome offset on uncoated paper (Munken Print White), and four-colour offset on coated (Arctic Volume White). Bound as a softcover Ota-bind (lay-flat) with french flaps on embossed paper (Keaykolour Embossing Fabric).
Each essay set in its own typeface: Stempel Schneidler by F .H. Ernst Schneidler (1936) for English; Italian Old Style by Frederic W. Goudy (1924) for Italian; and Lusitana by Ana Megda (2011) for Portuguese, under SIL Open Font License 1.1. Translations to English set in Atlas Grotesk (2012) by Carvalho Bernau. Titles, index and pagination set in Malaga by ATLAS (2019), a custom typeface inspired by the handmade tiles used for street names all over Andaluzia, commissioned by Ana Manso.
